The netbooks landscape has changed quite a bit since Asus introduced the EEE PC701 in 2007
as explained in a previous article. The Linux based 7” display allowed for a quick boot on the internet
via WIFI and Firefox. At the time, the price was right and portable to sit on my lap comfortably.

In my quest to find a suitable digital audio workstation I experimented with FL Studio 8, Ableton Live 7,
studied the Akai MPC and Sonar 7. Unfortunately no Cubase demo version is available to download and evaluate.
The Yamaha motif es has been my main workstation with it’s built in sequencer for several years and recently
introduced the Korg RADIAS into the mix. I must admit that I was totally against introducing a computer
mouse has a music making tool and was only interested in staying with hardware components.
Since the Motif ES’s sampling facility is unusable in its current form for my needs I started to attentively
look at the Akai MPC and the Roland MV series sampler/sequencer for triggering audio samples via sampling, recording and sequencing

After thinking about the difference between these two products I have come to the following conclusions.
First let’s talk about cost. The Akai MPC 2500 currently sells for about $1600 US and the Kontakt 3
for about $350 US. Both products are considered samplers. One is done in hardware while the
other in software in the case of Kontakt 3. However can one really sample in Kontakt 3?
The answer is no while the AKAI MPC provide input for sampling external sounds.
OF course all PC sound cards can record or sample and the sample use in Kontakt 3, I am being thorough in defining terms
