Asus eee preview
by Pierre Boisvenue. November 1, 2007
There is something big on the horizon, is it a plane or a train? No it’s the Asus 7” eee ultra portable computer.
The specs are pretty well advertised by now and there is no need for me to lay them all down.
The Sony PSP has served me well the past few years but will soon be replaced by the Asus eee. Why?
First
screen size, 4.3” versus 7” for starters. Then the fact that the OS is pre-installed with Linux allows me
to play movies in various formats as opposed the MP4 restriction on the PSP. Now just to be clear, the needs
the Asus eee perform are many but my needs are simple for this type of device. All I need it for is to browse
the web and play movies. That’s it that’s all. All the rest is a bonus. The PSP can do both but lacks a full
size keyboard and uses the proprietary Sony only memory cards and not expandable like the Asus
eee. Now why have
manufacturers not realize the enormous popularity that this device will bring is beyond me. A cheap solid
state ultra portable PC good for young and old that do not need or care for expensive operating systems along with high end hardware,
a device that simply caters to the humble needs of the many? This will be a hit, mark my words. Nice try Apple with you’re
locked
down proprietary iPod Touch the Ipod Phone
derivative you are no match for the Asus eee. Asus marketing department saw the light by
providing simplicity via Linux. Note however the Asus eee will also support windows Xp but in my opinion not worth
the monetary cost and continuous security patches that will take up the valuable solid state hard drive space.
This is not a serious business laptop, in my humble opinion, but more for simple entertainment, web browsing and occasional document writing and viewing.
I think that Asus is sending
a clear message to Sony, HP, Toshiba, Apple just to name a few high end laptop/
entertainment device manufactors that there is a market for cheap general purposes
ultra portables and that ASUS is serious about it.
