World In Conflict, a disappointment
by Pierre Boisvenue. October 2007
So I’ve played and few campaigns now with World in conflict (WIC) and I must say that gamespot and IGN will no longer be taken seriously for game reviews. I mean, yes WIC boast some real nice effects, but nice effects in lieu of game play does not make a fun game. It’s as if the game is meant to show off explosions right and left with disregard to the fun factor. The game is so heavily scripted in the sense I feel more like I’m
watching a movie more than playing a game. Now the camera, they are 4 keyboard shortcuts WASD, left and right mouse buttons, middle mouse click and mouse movement for navigation. Now that’s a lot of choices to view your movie ;) Perhaps this is a new way of gaming? Just watch, play with the camera and occasionally click commands here and there to watch 3D explosions?
Now, these 3D explosions will cost your dearly in terms of hardware requirements, especially for DirectX 10. Meaning, you will need a least a copy of windows Vista home premium and a HIGH end video card. For me the benefits of DirectX 10 are diluted by the resource hungry vista operating system meaning you will need to bring your game graphics settings down to compensate.
Then during game play I feel cheated again because the units are so small that I feel like I’m watching red, blue and greens icons moving about. Sure I can zoom in to watch the action up close but at the expense of not knowing what is happening in the theatre. The MAP view is really good in providing the gamer with unit locations and in between FMV really nice.
But really, that is it for me. I will never rely on so called professional reviews alone but will also consider user reviews along with using game demos because I do feel cheated with WIC.
