Company of heroes opposing Front installation
by Pierre Boisvenue. October 2007
Knowing that Company of heroes opposing front was released in the wild, after a week of waiting for local retailers
to sell it and did not want to rely on EBay I decided to give direct2drive.com a try. This is my first purchase
with direct2drive and had the same feeling when I made my first purchase on EBay and Amazon. The feeling of the unknown,
not knowing how the electronic download of about 8 Meg would turn out, how the game would install and activate having read other post about online activation and all.
The download took about 4 hours, on cable modem and came in four different compressed downloads. What I found confusing is the activation of the product.
All games installed in the past would only require the serial number to install. In this case I had to rely on the serial number to install
along with a 1 time only online activation. I had a little trouble, with the activation has I was not sure what the activation code was
and found out it’s an entire different set of numbers. There is an online activation and manual offline activation. For some reason,
the manual off line activation would not take but thankfully the online did.
I am not much of a multiplayer online kind of person and noticed that my internet connection may be off when I start the game.
I still need to find out of the game can also be installed offline on my laptop as I enjoy the flexibility to run the same game
on the go by copying my saved game progress between systems.
So I went ahead and installed a copy of COH:OF on my laptop, to note my laptop is almost never connected to the internet since
most of the time I do not have it. So this is where manual activation comes into play. The thing is I need internet
access to send the request code to direct2drive support to get the unlock code. You see when the game is purchased
from direct2drive the activation code is only usable for activating the game via the internet and cannot be used for
a manual activation without internet access. So I have emailed direct3drive support more than 5 hours ago and still
waiting for a response. I've also noticed that the manual activation is kind of useless since a new set of unlock
request code numbers are generated each time I start the game. So you really need an internet connection to activate the game.
I wonder if it's the same deal with the retail version. Regardless, I am disappointed with these imposed limitations
and will most likely not purchase a game in the future that uses these types of activations.
