Ajax,Flash and the Net Framework 3
by Pierre Boisvenue. 20/04/2007
The client side technologies available on the web browser are many. What got me interested at first
was the blog phenomena part of a new technological Internet wave called
web 2.0 by
O’Reilly
Being a software developer I got interested in the technologies involved and where Micorosft stood in this regards.
Let’s start with adobe Flash regarded as a Rich Internet Application. Having developped windows and internet application
using Microsoft products I got interested in
what Flash had to offer for
user interface design and object oriented development via actionscript.
After closer examination, I am very impressed with what Adobe as to offer with Flash 8 in providing user’s with a rich
experience for navigating information in a very visually intuitive pleasing manner.
Microsoft took notice and is releasing the .Net 3.0 Framework
and will write about shortly.
Ajax
in my opinion is what I call a stand by technology and find it’s use limited in that it is based on Javascript.
A computer world articledoes provide a good overview.
The Asp.Net implementation of Atlas is nothing more than a DLL, a webcontrol wrapper that enables AJAX.
The principle of having an object on a web page communicating with a server without having the entire page refresh but
just the object is what Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (Ajax) is what it's all about.
It is unfortunate that the web community has not embraced what flash currently has to offer but I’m sure in
specialized intranet solutions the benefits would be appreciated since
Flash is much more than for banner advertisements.
I’m off to look at Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Windows Workflow Foundation (WF), Windows Communication Foundation (WCF),
and Windows CardSpace to see what it’s all about.
Update: Vole joins Ajax
posse
and Ajax has been
hacked
